With the dog on the water: rules and tips for pet owners

"Owner, boat and happy dog - a wonderful day on the water sounds perfect, right? Still, taking your four-legged friend requires good preparation and knowledge of some important rules."

At Kajak Maasland, we understand that fun and safety go hand in hand, especially when your pet joins you on the water. That’s why we’re happy to share our best insights about "With your dog on the water: rules and tips for pet owners."

Safety first: what do you do before you leave?

Being well prepared is half the battle. Especially when you go out with your dog. Below you will find some points of attention before you get into one of our kayaks or canoes at Kajak Maasland:

  • Make sure your dog gets used to the boat. Let him calmly get acquainted with it on dry land beforehand, so he can get used to the rocking and movement.
  • A life jacket is recommended not only for you, but also for your dog. This way, he can swim more easily if the boat capsizes.
Life jackets for dogs come in many different sizes. We do not provide these. Therefore, we recommend that you bring your own life jacket for your pet.
  • Bring enough drinking water for yourself and your dog. Drinking river water can cause problems for pets.
  • Take a break sometimes; this is more pleasant for your dog.

With the dog on the water: rules and tips for pet owners

When you go on an adventure with your dog, there are a few clear rules. This keeps it pleasant and safe for you, your pet, and for other visitors:

  • On our premises and along the banks, your dog must be kept on a leash. Once on the water, you may let them off, so they won’t get stuck in case of capsizing.
  • Respect other users of the Maas. Not everyone is equally comfortable with dogs, so keep a sufficient distance.
  • Do not leave any waste on or around the water, including dog poop bags.

What if the boat capsizes? Stay calm!

The chance that your kayak will capsize is small, but an unexpected wave or movement can sometimes cause surprises. If it does happen, keep the following in mind:

  • Above all, stay calm. Your dog senses your emotions perfectly, and panic will only make the situation more difficult.
  • Make sure your life jacket is securely fastened and then calmly help your dog to the shore.
  • Never pull on the collar; your dog's life jacket provides support.
  • If your kayak floats alongside you, don’t worry. It won’t sink and you can use it as a support.
