"Drink water regularly. Protect yourself from the sun with a hat or sunscreen." That’s exactly the right attitude for those hesitating to go kayaking in tropical temperatures. Sure, it’s warm. But on the Meuse, a summer day often feels lighter than on a terrace in full sun.
Why Kayaking in Warm Weather Remains Pleasant
The river often provides a gentle breeze, while the open nature of the Meuse Valley offers space and cooling. Instead of seeking out heat among stone squares or busy shopping streets, you glide through a green landscape from Smeermaas to Kotem.
You can take a break at summer bar Maasvalley (Herbricht), which is open daily from Saturday 27/6 until September 1st! Or at brasserie De Rio in Uikhoven (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).
So there are 2 options after 6 and 8 km of kayaking.
According to the Royal Meteorological Institute (KMI) in Belgium, there is an official heatwave when the temperature reaches at least 25 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days, with at least three days above 30 degrees. That’s exactly when small precautions make a big difference.
Enjoy the Meuse Safely With Simple Precautions
A safe kayak trip/rafting descent starts with good preparation:
- Bring enough water, preferably more than you would normally plan.
- Wear a hat and use sunscreen.
- Choose light clothing and shoes that can get wet.
- Take sunglasses with a strap with you.
- Keep valuables dry in a drybag.
- Wear the supplied life jacket during the entire trip.
- Take a break at one of our stops (6 km: summer bar Maasvalley, open daily or 8 km brasserie De Rio, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays)
The 13 km route will take about 2 to 3 hours, depending on the water level.
